Training and Experience of Aircraft Fuel Handlers

Almost every type of aircraft requires liquid fuel to power its engines. Commercial jet or propeller-driven airplanes usually need jet fuel or high- . There are people called aircraft fuel handlers who are trained to pump fuel into aircraft at airports.

Aviation operations rely on aircraft fuel handlers to fill important roles. Commercial airlines contract with fueling companies to make sure their aircraft are properly fueled. In turn, aircraft fueling companies hire and train people in the processes and procedures for safely fueling aircraft.

The FAA has overall oversight of the training and certification of aircraft fuel handlers. In order to pass 40-hour fuel training certification courses, aircraft fuelers must attend biannual recertification training. Fuel is put into aircraft in outdoor work environments.

A fuel handler can handle many aircraft over a shift. Mobile fuel trucks and motorized hydrant carts are used by aircraft fuel handlers. An aircraft fuel handler must be able to hook up, pump fuel, balance the aircraft fuel tanks and then unhook the fuel pumping equipment.

Experience and training are important factors in assigning the level of responsibilities to an aircraft fuel handler. Good attendance and reliability standards are maintained by aircraft fuel handlers. Fuelers must perform fueling in a safe and efficient manner, and fill out fuel transaction slips.
