Section IV.C.2 states the criteria for accreditation in engineering programs in the US. The accreditation board for engineering and technology has an effective for evaluation during the 1995– 96 accreditation cycle.

The General Criteria for Master's Level Engineering Program

The second section contains the General Criteria for Baccalaureate Level Programs that must be satisfied by all programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and the General Criteria for Masters Level Programs that must be satisfied by those programs that are seeking advanced level accreditation. The program must show that the faculty members have the competencies to cover all of the areas of the program. There must be enough faculty to accommodate adequate levels of student-faculty interaction, student advising and counseling, university service activities, professional development, and interactions with industrial and professional practitioners, as well as employers of students.

The program faculty must have appropriate qualifications and must have enough authority to ensure the proper guidance of the program and to develop and implement processes for the evaluation, assessment, and continuing improvement of the program. The overall competence of the faculty may be judged by factors such as education, diversity of background, engineering experience, teaching effectiveness and experience, ability to communicate, enthusiasm for developing more effective programs, level of scholarship, participation in professional societies, and licensure as Professional Engineers. The master's level engineering program must have policies and procedures in place to ensure that a program of study with specific educational goals is developed for each student.

Student performance and progress toward completion of their studies must be monitored. The program must document that students who graduate meet all graduation requirements. The master's level engineering program requires each student to demonstrate a mastery of a specific field of study or area of professional practice consistent with the master's program name and beyond the minimum requirements of baccalaureate level programs.

The master's level engineering program must show that the faculty members have the competencies to cover all of the areas of the program. Faculty teaching graduate level courses must have appropriate qualifications. The program must have enough faculty to accommodate adequate levels of student-faculty interaction, student advising and counseling, university service activities, professional development, and interactions with industrial and professional practitioners, as well as employers of students.

The Science of Engineering

Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items. The disciplines of engineering encompass a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application. See the glossary of engineering.

Civil engineering, a technical discipline that evolved as a design discipline, was used as a way to distinguish between those who worked on military projects and those who worked on non-military projects. The pyramids in ancient Egypt, ziggurats of Mesopotamia, the Acropolis and Parthenon in Greece, the Roman aqueducts, Via Appia and Colosseum, and the Brihadeeswarar Temple of Thanjavur are just some of the places that stand as monuments. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Pharos of Alexandria were considered to be among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The development of military aircraft was done after the Wright brothers' success in the 1960's. I. Combining theoretical physics with experiments is what is being done to provide fundamental background science.

Chemical engineering is the application of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering principles in order to carry out chemical processes on a commercial scale. Engineering biological systems for a purpose is called bioengineering. Examples of bioengineering research includebacteria engineered to produce chemicals, new medical image technology, portable and rapid disease diagnostic devices, and prosthetics.

Earth systems engineering and management is a new branch of the field that combines engineering studies, environmental science, engineering ethics and philosophy of engineering. Aeronautical engineering studies design, manufacture and use of aircraft, satellites, rockets, and other objects. It studies the pressure difference and the aerodynamic shape of a vehicle to make sure it is safe and efficient.

Teaching Engineering Students to Understand Technical Concepts

Candidates for engineering jobs need to be able to explain technical ideas in an understandable and engaging manner to students. The skills section of your engineering teacher job description can be used to explain the need for candidates to be able to translate engineering principles into a language beginners can understand. Since education requirements can vary widely, it is important to specify what training you require of your candidates. The example below shows you how to include things in your engineering teacher job description.
