Recreation Workers in the United States
Recreation workers help people stay active, improve their fitness and have fun. They work with groups in summer camps, fitness and recreational sports centers, nursing care facilities, nature parks and other settings. They may lead activities such as arts and crafts, sports, music, dramatics, or games.
Recreation leaders are responsible for the daily operation of the program. They primarily organize and direct participants, schedule the use of facilities, set up and keep records of equipment use, and ensure that recreation facilities and equipment are used and maintained properly. They can lead classes and teach in a recreational activity.
Camp counselors, activity specialists, and other recreation workers may work weekends or part-time or irregular hours. Depending on where they are employed and the type of activity they lead, seasonal workers can work as little as 90 days or as long as 9 months. In areas of the United States that have warm winters, outdoor swimming pools may use related recreation workers for a majority of the year.
They can only work during the summer in other areas of the country. Workers who gain experience may be promoted to positions with greater responsibilities. Recreation workers with managerial skills can advance to managerial positions.
They may start their own recreation company or become directors of a recreation department. The Holland Code framework states that recreation workers have an interest in Helping and Persuading. The Helping interest area is focused on helping, serving, counseling, or teaching other people.

The Outlook for Recreation Workers
The range of recreation coordinators' salaries varies from organization to organization. Recreation coordinators can quickly move to higher-level positions with higher salaries since they do not need extensive experience. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the outlook for recreation workers is good, because of an increased need for workers in sports and fitness centers. More recreation workers are needed in assisted living and retirement facilities because of the aging baby boomers.
Community-based Recreation, Leisure and Sports Activities
Recreation, leisure and sports activities are important to communities. Their many benefits include improving the health and well-being of individuals, contributing to the empowerment of individuals, and promoting the development of inclusive communities. Recreation, leisure and sports activities are relevant to people of all ages, abilities and levels of skill.
The types of recreation, leisure and sports activities people participate in vary greatly depending on local context and social systems. The role of the CBR programmes is to promote increased participation of people with disabilities in recreation, leisure and sports activities, and to provide support to mainstream organizations and programmes to enable them to strengthen their capacity by offering appropriate and accessible recreation, leisure and sports activities. Recreation is the act of doing things to refresh your body and mind and make your leisure time more enjoyable.
Recreation activities include walking, swimming, meditation, reading, playing games and dancing. In low-income countries where people work all day just to survive, the concept of leisure time is not always understood and is not a priority. Fishing and handicrafts are considered means of livelihood in low-income countries, and are considered recreational in high-income countries.
While the benefits of recreation and sporting activities have been highlighted, it is important to remember that they should not be used as a substitute for other opportunities, such as education or livelihood. Some people with disabilities may need reasonable accommodations to participate in sporting activities. With a little creativity and flexibility, activities and equipment can be adapted at a minimal or no cost to ensure the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities.
