The Careers of Industrial Designer

Industrial designers develop concepts for manufactured products. They combine engineering, business, and art to make products that people use. Industrial designers consider the function, aesthetic, production costs, and user experience when developing new product concepts.

Industrial designers focus on a product category. They may work on consumer electronics products, such as computers and smart phones. Other designers come up with ideas for products such as new bicycles.

Other designers, sometimes called user interface designers or interaction designers, focus on the user experience of a product, such as an electronic device, and ensure that it is easy to use. Work tables for sketching designs, meeting rooms with whiteboards for creativity, and computers for preparing designs and communicating with clients are some of the things industrial designers use their work spaces for. Industrial designers can travel to testing facilities, design centers, clients' exhibit sites, users' homes or workplace, and places where the product is manufactured, even if they work in offices.

Industrial designers who are self-employed or work for firms that hire them out to other organizations may need to adjust their workdays frequently in order to meet with clients in the evenings or on weekends. They may spend some of their time looking for new projects or competing with other designers for contracts. Designers who have been in large firms may be promoted to chief designer, design department head, or other positions.

Some designers become teachers. Many teachers still consult privately or operate small design studios. Some designers open their own firms.

The Next Decade: A Survey of Industrial Designers

Industrial designers work in a variety of industries. Industrial designers can travel to testing facilities, design centers, clients' exhibit sites, users' homes or workplace, and places where the product is manufactured, even if they work in offices. Over the decade, there are projected to be 3,100 openings for industrial designers.

Many openings are expected to be caused by the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or retire. Industrial designers had a median annual wage of $71,640 in May 2020. Half of the workers in an occupation earn more than the median wage, and half earn less.

The lowest 10 percent earned less than $41,860, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $118,440. As many products, such as the smartphones, increasingly require more intuitive design and sophisticated technology, demand for industrial designers is expected to continue. Industrial designers are expected to lose their jobs in some manufacturing industries as fewer products are made in the United States.
