The position of Attorney General is an appointment by the president and confirmed by the Senate. The deputy attorney general can assume all powers and duties of the office if the Attorney General is absent or dies. The deputy Attorney General would have all of the powers of the office at hand, even if they were not confirmed as Attorney General.

The Department of Justice has been protected from the executive branch since the Watergate scandal. The heads of military forces and law enforcement have been accused of violating civil rights.

The Office of the Attorney General was created to be a one-person position. The person in the position was supposed to be a lawyer and be able to advise the president and cabinet on law-related matters.

The Law of Professional Responsibility

Professional responsibility includes the issue of withdrawal from representation. An attorney must stop representing a client if they are not needed. If a lawyer discovers their client is guilty of a crime, they will perform a voluntary withdrawal.
