Apprenticeships in Underground Pipelaying

Underground piping is a vital part of the building. Without the ability to discharge sewage and manage the storm water and pipe in fresh water, the buildings that the world depends on would not be usable. Underground piping is cut, fit and laid by skilled pipelayers.

The piping may be made of a variety of materials. The process of laying piping requires the Pipelayer to be able to cut and fit each section of piping tight so that the joints in the piping are tight and no liquid leaks out of the pipe joints. Heavy machinery may be operated by pipelayers.

The piping being installed is heavy and requires heavy equipment to move it. Heavy machinery allows for the placement of piping. The complexity of a commercial project is much greater than that of a residential project.

Residential projects do not require the degree of engineering that a larger commercial project would. Commercial projects typically involve a lot of engineering. The project may be very complex due to the different soil types and other factors.

There are no requirements for Pipelayers to be educated. A skilled pipelayer has specific skills and abilities that allow them to operate heavy equipment and lay pipe according to a specific layout. Some certifications may beneficial for a Pipelayer's career.

Pipelayers: A Job Description

While they are in the same class of work, pipelayers and pipefitters are not technically the same job. The initial groundwork for construction is performed by the pipelayers who lay down the pipes that provide sewage disposal, drainage or water. Natural gas distribution, where the gas is used to be used as fuel, and the building of utility systems are some of the industries in which a pipelayer may work.

The pipelayer's job involves cutting lengths of pipe to form sewer systems or the infrastructure for carrying natural gas or water. The pipe has to be cut very precisely to conform to specifications and aligned perfectly before being connected by welding or glue. They may be responsible for digging trenches for the pipes.

The trenches need skill and knowledge to dig the requirements that are very specific. Heavy equipment operation, blueprint reading, and other skills are required for pipelayers to do their job. Many skilled welders are employed to work on pipes, which often involve a lot of welding.

The welding methods used in connecting the pipes are different from other welding methods. Depending on the job, pipelayers may be required to use automatic welding equipment. Depending on where the work is being done, pipelayers work outdoors in harsh conditions.

Pipelayers must be able to stand up against the elements and be able to work in less than clean surroundings. The noisy place where pipelaying is done is due to the equipment being used and the workers shouting over the noise. The pipelaying job is often dangerous, with workers in danger of being burned with welding torches or suffering other injuries due to working around heavy equipment, as the pressures of the job are often too much.
