Loss Prevention Officers are usually in a retail environment and are responsible for preventing damage and theft. Their duties include patrolling store aisles and watching security camera footage. Loss Prevention Officers are employed by store owners to limit their losses from theft by discouraging criminal behavior and arresting anyone attempting to steal products.

They hold people accountable for the damage they cause to the company by vandalizing or stealing. They look for patterns of suspicious behavior and watch shoppers when they attempt to leave the store without paying. Loss Prevention Officers work with law enforcement and other security officers to prevent serial thefts.

Loss Prevention Officers can work on the floor of a store or sit in an office to observe customers. They notice when a new customer enters the store and pay attention to how they handle merchandise, noting if they attempt to hide products in their clothing or bags. Loss Prevention Officers strategically approach would-be thieves and record their theft.

Depending on the store policy, the accused person could be held in the back office, or the Loss Prevention Officer could take their photo and ban them from the store. Good Loss Prevention Officers use a lot of attention to detail, which they use to spot thefts or vandals before they occur or recognize when known thieves or banned individuals enter the store. They are assertive and confident so that they can question suspects' behavior.

Loss Prevention Officers have good judgement about how to approach different people and safely retrieve the stolen merchandise.
